Big, beautiful and heavy antique Georgian sterling silver gilt, paste and mother of pearl cupid lover's pendant locket with sterling silver belcher chain, dating to circa 1790. This gorgeous antique George III late 18th century sterling silver gilt pendant locket necklace would have been gifted to a special lady in a discerning Georgian gentleman's life. Made to catch candlelight and sparkle enticingly it has the most beautiful painted cupid, the God of desire, standing in a floral garden with wings extended and raising a bow and arrow. The painting is set behind crystal glass and is surrounded by a wonderful oval frame of large glittering paste stones, set underneath a graduating paste stone studded bow (representing love and marriage).

The silver gilt reverse has a large hinged compartment with original beveled crystal and has been lined with shimmering mother of pearl. The locket has a slide at the top with an antique Victorian era sterling silver belcher chain attached.

The locket is unmarked and tests for silver, the chain has undecipherable hallmarks including an animal and also tests for silver. The locket/pendant measures approximately 2 1/2 inches x 1 5/8 inches. The chain is about 20 inches long. The painting and reverse compartment are approximately 30mm x 22mm. The paste stones measure from 4.5mm down to about 2mm.

The necklace has a total weight of approximately 36.0 grams. The pendant, painting and chain are all in excellent condition with only light general wear.
