This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it.

The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. In 1882 Peter Carl Fabergé took over his fathers jewelry firm in Moscow, Russia. To that day it had been a successful, yet largely unknown jewelry firm.

Peter brought back the old tradition of enameling and perfected the guilloche enameling process. He combined precious gemstones and metals together in unique objects and jewelry. During the Art Nouveau period, Fabergé became the jeweler to the Russian Tsars.

There he became world famous for his Imperial Easter Eggs that are known the world over. The craftsmanship from his own designs to the work masters he employed in several of his factories became synonymous with perfection. Cloisonné enamel is a Russian style of enameling, most commonly known for its application in decorating Fabergé eggs. This craft begins when an artisan uses thin bands of silver or gold to detail intricate scenes.

These scenes are often floral or foliate in motif and can be applied to jewelry as well as Fabergé eggs, dining sets, and other decorations. The small compartments created using the bands of silver and gold are filled with enamel and then fired in a kiln. This type of enameling peaked in Tsarist era Russia and is highly prized by collectors. These incredible pieces are highly regarded and gorgeous examples of artistic triumph.
